ENVIRONNEMENTAL IMPACT OF MINING OPRATIONS

An ecologically friendly mine
Malaga is constantly reducing the environmental impact of its mining operations. Extraction and production processes and methods are evolving in ways that encourage the preservation of the ecosystem.
Use of hydroelectricity, for instance, has significantly reduced extraction-related emissions.

Environmentally friendly production methods
The context of the Pasto Bueno mine is conducive to a more ecologically friendly type of mining.

Mechanical ore extraction
Gravimetric processing (crushing followed by physical separation) of tungsten ore at the Pasto Bueno mine requires no dangerous chemical products. Energy and water are the main resources used to beneficiate the ore.

Development of hydroelectricity
Use of energy produced by diesel generators has been eliminated thanks to the construction and start-up, with Swiss partners, of a hydroelectric power plant in Pasto Bueno, and a transmission line linking it to the Peruvian power grid.

The plan and its results
The mine has an environmental management and sustainable development plan that ensures its compliance with Peruvian mining laws. It includes the involvement of an environmental management unit.
The mining company is particularly proud of having reduced its carbon emissions footprint in 2008-2009.

The environmental management unit’s activities in 2009-2010
The following activities have been introduced, and are managed by the Malaga environmental management unit:
- Malaga’s social development projects for the benefit of local communities
- Public hearings and participatory workshops set up for local communities and linked to mining activities in Pasto Bueno
- Water quality, air pollution and noise are monitored at specific points in the mine and processing plant and around the tailings sites.
- Enlargement of the Huaura tailings site
- Construction of a new tailings site at Jajarajau
- The environmental impact assessments required are produced either internally or by specialized firms under contract. They are then submitted to the proper authorities for approval.
